3D scanning questions and answers

A 3D scanner measures the surface of an object and turns it into a digital 3D model. You can view the model on screen, measure it, change it or use it to make something.

Most solid objects, from small parts to larger items. Very shiny, black or see-through surfaces are harder. Tell us about your item using the quote form and we will tell you honestly if we can help.

We use metrology-grade 3D scanners, accurate to up to 0.02 mm in blue laser modes and up to 0.075 mm in infrared mode. These are laboratory figures. Real-world accuracy depends on the object’s size, its surface and the scan setup, and it is lower across large objects. We will confirm what is achievable for your job when we quote.

It depends on the job. We will give you an estimate with your quote. If your deadline is tight, tell us when you get in touch.

Yes. We offer on-site scanning across North, South, West and East Yorkshire. Tell us where the item is and we will agree the best way to scan it.

Usually a mesh file such as STL or OBJ. We can also provide colour models, web-friendly files, CAD-ready models or inspection reports, depending on the job. We confirm file types in your quote.

Scanning uses light and does not touch the surface. Some surfaces need a temporary scanning spray to scan well. We only use it with your permission, and never on historic or delicate items without agreement.

Yes, a scan can be used to build a CAD-ready model for engineering work. This is a separate step from scanning. Tell us what you need it for and we will include it in the quote.

No clinical work. We support clinicians and labs by scanning casts, moulds and models they supply. We do not diagnose, treat or give clinical advice.

Ask us. Large items and spaces depend on the equipment needed. We will tell you honestly whether it is a good fit for us before you pay anything.

Yes. We only use your files for your job, and we are happy to sign your NDA or confidentiality agreement before we see or scan anything. If your project is sensitive, tell us when you get in touch.
